1x Slot

PCIe slots come in different physical configurations: x1, x4, x8, x16, x32. The number after the x tells you how many lanes (how data travels to and from the PCIe card) that PCIe slot has. As mentioned, the RX570 covers the 1x slot, leaving only the 4x slot, nearest the edge of the motherboard, free. I chose to put the Firewire card in that slot. I found many others suggesting working solution for utilizing the 1x slot under the graphics card by using a (PCIe 1x extension cable). That extension cable comes with two lengths of. A PCIe x1 slot has one lane and can move data at one bit per cycle. A PCIe x2 slot has two lanes and can move data at two bits per cycle (and so on). (Image credit: Erwin Mulialim/Wikimedia.
Take a look at this picture of a PCI-Express x1 slot (at the end of a flexibleextender) that was cut out to allow down-plugging a PCIe x16 card into it.

I noticed that when people use a Dremel to cut the plastic, they tend tointuitively place the cutting disk along the longitudital axis, often damagingthe pins in the slot because of the thickness of the cutting disk.

Instead it is easier to place the cutting disk along the lateral axis. Thisremoves more plastic material, but does not necessitate a really precise cutwith a thin disk and steady hand :-)
